Players Eye Major Step At British Open
With Tiger Woods missing his first major since turning pro in 1996, here are five players looking to break through at Royal
Birkdale and win their first major.
ADAM SCOTT
•Age: 28
•World ranking: 3
•Need to know: Despite having not finished in the top 10 of a major since tying for third at the 2006 PGA, he's primed for that signature victory.
SERGIO GARCIA
•Age: 28
•World ranking: 7
•Need to know: Coming off his win at The Players Championship in May; he has finished in the top five at each of the past three British Opens.
JUSTIN ROSE
•Age: 27
•World ranking: 9
•Need to know: Finished fourth at Royal Birkdale as a 17-year-old amateur in 1998, but he has not had a top-10 British finish since turning pro.
ANTHONY KIM
•Age: 23
•World ranking: 14
•Need to know: Making his first British appearance; two wins this year have come at major-caliber courses (Quail Hollow and Congressional).
LEE WESTWOOD
•Age: 35
•World ranking: 18
•Need to know: Missed joining Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate in U.S. Open playoff by one shot; has six top-five worldwide finishes in 2008.
