TAMPA - Summer enrollment is up at the University of South Florida, but every number tells a story.
The number of transfer students is up, but it may be the last increase for a while. To contain its enrollment, starting in the fall, the university is restricting seats to more qualified transfer students.
And though total enrollment is up throughout the USF system this summer, the number of students decreased on the Tampa campus, where there's little room for growth as the university fills a multimillion-dollar hole in its budget.
Here is a sample of these and other enrollment trends -- numbers that reflect a dramatic increase of men who enrolled this summer and a dramatic drop in the number of new graduate students:
•24,074: Number of students enrolled at USF's Tampa campus this summer, a drop of nearly 1 percent from the previous year.
•2,332: Number of students enrolled at USF's St. Petersburg campus, an increase of 3 percent.
•24: Percent increase from last year of new students at the Tampa campus who transferred from a Florida community college.
•26: Percent decrease from last year of new graduate students enrolled at the Tampa campus.
•13.9: Percent increase since last year of new male students on all of USF's campuses.
•0.7: Percent decline since last year of new female students on all of USF's campuses.
•9: Percent increase of black students at USF's Tampa campus, the largest increase of any racial group, aside from American Indian students.
•4: Percent increase of white students at the Tampa campus.
