Javier Navarro was on a riding mower cutting his front lawn Sunday when a car drove up on his property, heading straight toward him, according to Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office deputies.
A Lincoln Aviator - heading south on the street - drove onto his property at 2711 Wiggins Road.
He jumped off the mower and, moments later, the Aviator, driven by David Estrada-Garcia, 38, struck the mower head-on.
According to Navarro, the front doors of the car opened and Estrada-Garcia and his wife Nellie jumped out of the vehicle.
"I saw the doors flying open and my thought was, 'They're going to kill me,'" Navarro said.
Navarro said Estrada-Garcia attacked him, so he fought back.
"I grabbed a stroller and started swinging it when [Nellie] hit me with a golf club right here on the side of my head," knocking him to the ground, Navarro explained.
Inside the Aviator were Estrada-Garcia's three children, ages 4 months, 1 and 4 years. Navarro said he heard them screaming inside the SUV.
According to Navarro, he pushed himself off the ground and ran to a neighbor's house. His attackers drove away.
Navarro said this was not the first time he had met Estrada-Garcia. He said that the two have been fighting since 2006.
Estrada-Garcia was arrested about two hours later at his home, at 3805 Sugar Creek Court, and charged with aggravated assault with a motor vehicle and child neglect, both felonies, and criminal mischief, a misdemeanor. He was released late Monday night on $9,750 bail, a sheriff's report said.
The mower sustained $50 in damages.
