TAMPA - Some observant firefighters spotted an electrical malfunction that showered a street with sparks and likely caused an electrical problem in high-rise building Monday night, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.
Firefighters on Engine No. 12 were finishing up a medical call near Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Tampania Avenue when a transformer on a power pole blew up and started to shoot sparks onto the street, officials said.
At almost the same time, a fire alarm sounded in the eight-story Tampa Medical Tower, at 2727 West Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Crews reported smoke in the stairwell and on the fifth floor.
Firefighters found an electrical panel damaged by a power surge, likely caused by the blown transformer, fire rescue officials said.
The building was unoccupied and no one was injured.
