"Fried Green Tomatoes," 6:45 p.m. tonight, HBO Signature
A bored housewife finds excitement in the tale of an elderly woman who once ran a train station cafe and may or may not have had a hand in the killing of another human being who may or may not have had it coming to him anyway. Flashbacks ensue. And flash-forwards. And flashmiddles. Along the way, fried green tomatoes become an iconic symbol of southern simplicity. The end.
"Food Network Challenge," 9 tonight, Food Network
This episode features the granddaddy of all cooking contests, the Pillsbury Bake-Off. Filmed at the most recent event in Dallas, it's fascinating to watch average cooks compete with die-hard, full-time contest freaks to see who can claim the $1 million prize.
"American Originals: Budweiser," 9 p.m. Thursday, CNBC
A look at how Anheuser-Busch cultivated its Budweiser brand to remain a leader even as it was losing market share through use of funny reptiles and horsies with big clompy feet. Should make for an interesting show, considering Budweiser is about to be swallowed - Get it? Beverage company, swallowed? Nevermind. - by Belgian megaconglomerate InBev.
"America Eats," 8 a.m. Saturday, History
An examination of the soft-drink industry includes its origins as a mineral-water beverage pushed by small-town pharmacists and the manufacturing process necessary to produce mass quantities today. Crafty marketing strategies also are highlighted. Pepsi Clear, anyone?
