Along with the grand tradition of holding presidential elections every four years, the United States also holds dear the practice of making a quick buck from the passions surrounding those elections.
This year's front-runner is New York City chocolatier L.A. Burdick Handmade Chocolates, which has created boxes of assorted half-pound and quarter-pound chocolates with flavors that invoke the spirit, symbolism and backgrounds of presumptive party nominees John McCain and Barack Obama.
The McCain assortment features Arizona Citrus, Hot Pepper Tequila, Peanut Butter and Kentucky Rye flavors. The Obama box offers Hawaiian Pineapple, Kenyan Coffee, Kansas Corn Crunch and Tennessee Sour Mash. Read into those choices as you like.
Burdick is asking that customers "vote early and often" through their purchases. As of Tuesday afternoon, Obama boxes were outselling McCain 8,300 to 3,700. An informal poll in the Tribune newsroom found a dead heat; both sample boxes were emptied by the end of the day.
