Custom Car Racing Is Fun For All Ages

LAND O' LAKES - Thirty cars of pine and plastic set hearts to racing at the fourth annual Myrtle Lake Baptist Church Pine Car Rally.

Young folks and adults worked together to craft custom cars from a block of wood, four plastic tires and four nail-like axles. They competed Saturday in four divisions: Kid's Stock, first- through fifth-graders; Royal Racers, the same age bunch using Royal Ambassador rules; Teen-Adult Stock; and Outlaw Modifieds, using Woodcar Independent Racing League rules.

The Outlaw Modifieds, new this year along with the Royal Racers, blistered the track as they sped along on wafer-thin wheels, according to race director John Berti, who also provided these results.

Royal Racers

• Heat winner: Austin Simmons

• Feature finish: Simmons, first; Phillip Jondreau, second

• Best feature lane time: 2.6209 seconds

Kid's Stock

• Heat winners: Evan Johnston, Simmons, Sydney Laymon

• Feature finish: Johnston, first; Quinn Ausburn, second; Laymon, third

• Best feature lane time: 2.6141 seconds

Teen-Adult Stock

• Heat winners: Carol Berti, Tiffani Bowman, Pat Johnston
• Semifinal winners: Jerry Johnston, Berti

• Feature finish: Pat Johnston, first; Jerry Johnston, second; Berti, third

• Best feature lane time: 2.6047 seconds

Outlaw Modified

• Heat winners: Alan Johnston, Jerry Johnston
• Feature finish: Alan Johnston, first; Jerry Johnston, second; Berti, third

• Best feature lane time: 2.4908 seconds

Ready to rev up for the fifth annual rally next July? Car kits are always available for $5 at Myrtle Lake Baptist Church, 2017 Riegler Road, near State Road 54 and Collier Parkway. Register at the church office weekdays from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m..

The pine car rally is open to anyone in the community, including Cub Scout Pinewood Derby, AWANA Grand Prix and Royal Racer competitors.
