Songwriter's 9/11 Image On Billboards Stirs Controversy

Photo from WESH-TV, Orlando

The Republican Party of Florida spokeswoman Katie Gordon said her party has nothing to do with the billboards, but supports Mike Meehan's right to free speech.

Published: July 16, 2008

TAMPA - Three billboards in the Orlando area that depict New York's World Trade Center in flames with the words "Please Don't Vote for a Democrat" are the work of a St. Cloud songwriter and commercial painter who is marketing his latest song.

Mike Meehan doesn't apologize for the in-your-face gripping image that burned itself into the collective memory of Americans who recall the events of Sept. 11, 2001. The billboards went up Sunday, he said, and have already sparked controversy. Also on the advertisement is his Web address, www.therepublicansong.com, where a CD of the song can be ordered

The billboards are a way to hawk the song, "Please Don't Vote for a Democrat." Since the billboards have hit the roadsides, sales have increased some, he said.

He said he paid for the billboards but won't say how much they cost. He's hoping CD sales will offset the cost. If sales are high, he said more billboards could be the result.

"It's very possible I might put up quite a few more," he said.

"Yes," he said, "I paid for them. It's a small price compared to what our soldiers pay to defend this country and a small price for all those people who were killed when the twin towers were destroyed."

Eric Jotkoff, spokesman for the Florida Democratic Party in Tallahassee, said this morning that he was aware of the billboards.

"The fact that the Republican Party and their allies are using the national tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001, for partisan political gain is shameful," he said in a prepared statement. "The Republican leadership should stop playing politics with the death of nearly 3,000 Americans and join us in calling for the billboards to come down," he said.

The Republican Party of Florida spokeswoman Katie Gordon said her party has nothing to do with the billboards, but supports Meehan's right to free speech.

"I would hope that people driving by the billboards would not automatically assume the Republican Party was behind it," she said. "We are certainly not."

The billboards do spark debate about issues of national security, and that's a good thing, she said, the disturbing images notwithstanding.

Meehan is aware of the criticism of the billboards, he said, but he said people should remember what happened seven years ago.

"Some people are taking offense," he said. "I find it just as disturbing not to put the trade towers up and not to remind people of the terrorists. We need to show this more often. People don't ever see [these images] anymore. Now, you show it again, and everybody's shocked, as if it happened today."

Meehan said he had been a professional musician until about 15 years ago and even once had stepped in to play a Central Florida venue when Jerry Lee Lewis failed to show up for a concert.

Currently, he owns AAA All Star, a commercial painting contracting company in Central Florida, he said.

He said he recorded "Please Don't Vote for a Democrat" last year with a country slant, but this year's version has more of a rock 'n' roll sound, "with kind of a Van Halen solo."

I can just smell the money hungry, swift boat song this guy is singing. If he's really that thoughtful of the troops, why not stop exploiting 9/11 and take his guitar to the closest recruiting office. I'm sure they'll waive the age limit. This type of gimic is so transparent that not even the Republicans politicians will stand by his brand of "Patriotism". Funny thing is there seem to be lots of "geniuses" more than ready to cheer him on. Please

Sounds like some people don't want the voters to remember 9/11 happened because Clinton kept ignoring things like when our sailors were attacked outside the US. Sure does a blow hole in the idea that if they attack americans somewhere else we won't have to worry. Clinton probably knew that a war upsets the economy and he didn't want that to happen on his watch!

The current Republican administration made the biggest tactical blunder in the "War on Terror" that could possibly be made with their ill fated decision to invade Iraq. Let's all try to remember Iraq had nothing to do with the terrorists who attacked us on 911. Those "evil folks" were from Saudi Arabia and trained with Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The terrorists are once again gaining strength in those two countries because we have wasted our troops in a useless war in a country that had no means to attack us.

Even John McCain has come around and now says we need more troops in Afghanistan which is a position that Obama took a long time ago. Sorry I can't vote for McCain who said we could be in Iraq for another 100 years. This war has cost over 4000 American lives, countless Iraqi lives and almost $600 billion dollars of our tax payer money.

Clinton had the opportunity to have Osama handed to him and he passed on it. I'm thankful that GW was in office at the time of 9/11 and not Gore or any of the cronies from the Democratic party. I've said it before, and I'll say it again I'm proud of the majority of the things that Bush has done. I'm a VN vet and if I was younger, I'd have already been to the recruting office. The political exploitation of 911 by the struggling GOP shows that will say or do anything just to remain in power. Just look what happened to good Ole Rudy G in the primaries. People got tired of hearing 911 after every other word. It is not that people don't remember it is just folks are getting tired of hearing the same thing over and over and the Neo Cons well their days are almost over politically so in response they just can't seem to think of anything that is going to save them so they have no choice but to play the fear card. Msengineer:

What a shame that American politics has gotten to the point where if you are honest, it hurts your chances of being elected. McCain is being honest when he says there could be a troop presence in Iraq for 100 years. We are still in Germany, Korea, Japan, etc. Is that wrong? No, it is in the national security interest of this country to position our troops overseas, to help secure our positions, our allies and overall global security. We would be fools to have a way to establish bases in Iraq and not seize that opportunity. If you don't think Iraq is a necessary ally in continuing the battle against Islamic extremists, you are sadly misinformed about the strategic importance of Iraq.

Your alternative to honesty is to vote for a man who, everyday, is clearly demonstrating how dishonest he truly is. Obama did not know about his Pastor's racist rants? Obama's current ad says he supported welfare to work legislation when he actually opposed it. Obama wanted us to immediately withdraw from Iraq and now thinks it is important to speak with the military generals before withdrawing troops. Obama committed to taking public campaign financing, but when he was able to raise tons of money, he backed out of his committment. Obama supported the gun ban in Washington DC and then became a fan of the 2nd Amendement when the Supreme Court deemed the DC law to be unconstitutional. He opposed late term abortion bans and now says he is for such a ban. Against Hillary, he said he would raise Social Security taxes on anyone making more than $100,000, now he says he will only raise it on those making more than $250,000.

Bottom line, Msengineer, I would encourage you to give greater weight to the honesty of the politician you plan to vote for. Obama will raise taxes and if you don't think it will effect you and your family, you are wrong. Higher taxes on the "rich" is nothing more than higher taxes on the small business owners who employ 70% of all Americans. Taxing the "rich" only results in those taxes being filtered down to the poor and middle class by way of higher prices, lower wages, fewer benefits or less jobs. If that is the recipe you think will make the country better, vote for Obama, regardless of his lies.

gutless cowards who hide behind the curtain of freedom that every service man and woman provides for you so you can vomit your idiotic belief that one man, our President is responsible for any of this? Do you actually lack the brains to understand that this is just part of who we are as a nation of free thinking individuals. The foreclosures? Did these people not read the contract they sign for the single biggest purchase of their lives? The price of gas is the oil companies fault? It's the libs who constantly want to protect the yellow buttholed Alaskan pigeon instead of preparing for the future energy needs of this country? The war in Iraq is the President's fault? So let me get this straight for my own purposes, you believe that he said, we're going to war, and he didn't ask anyone? I'm reasonably sure that he went through Congress and the Senate and even the Dems were onboard (even your candidate this year, unless he has flip-flopped again). By the way, where is all of this oil we went to "steal"? Remember, the libs say the war is over oil, so where is it? And for you "war-haters", war is waged everyday, in the streets of Tampa, in the fields of Darfur, on the mountain tops of Afghanistan and in the cess pool that is called Washington DC. If we took 100k troops to Darfur, they would be called "Heroes for humanitarian aid" even though you know we would have to kill those who are committing the genicide. Finally 2old4jail, you make me want to puke. You have dishonered your husband's service, the sacrifices of those who came before him and your husband's good name. julezizcool: I believe your blanket attack that includes me is unwarranted, since I never said a word in my post about the current administration. I simply said I disagreed with another poster (primarly I disagree with "using" 9/11 to further anyone's political agenda). And I don't particularly think that Cindy Sheehan and I would be bosom buddies. My daughter's best friend died from an IED in Afghanistan and I mourn him every day. My son's best friend is on his third tour (age 21) with the Marines in Iraq. And we have had multiple family members over there. Contrary to your belief, not ALL military personnel, nor their families, are in completely support of the Iraq war.

We do belong in Afghanistan. I have no problem with that and consider my daughter's friend to be a hero and will honor him all my life. But we never belonged in Iraq and I have a right to that opinion.

Furthermore, you can feel sorry for my husband if you wish, but he happens to agree with me. And he has 23 honorable years in the service including time as an Army 82nd Airborne medic. So you, my dear, can shove YOUR post. I would never protest at someone's funeral. You do not know me and you are extremely, extremely off base in your assumptions about me. And all because I happen to think differently than you. Perhaps you are the one who needs an education.

Patriotism is many things. I salute the flag with a lump in my throat. I cry when I sing "Proud to be an American" and I donate to the USO. I hold my hand over my heart and stand at attention when a flag passes, and I sing the words (correctly!) to the National Anthem wherever I am. I was brought up in a Marine family and I know respect. I send packages and letters of encouragement to the troops. But I do NOT have to believe that we belong in Iraq.

Take THAT and insert it where your head is. Somewhere around your transverse colon, I presume. How dare you label me with your ignorrant assumptions.

I have voted both tickets and am proud of using my brain instead of the kind of partisan BS that is so prevalent on many of these posts.

The highest and most truthful source should have been the President, we should not have to hire a Private Eye to prove the facts the whole administration yelled out loud. That's why they shoud be impeached and tried for war crimes.

One effin tour in Iraq the first time when we should have gotten the job done except for the Libs back here, one in Afghanistan where once again we should have gotten the job done except for your libs, and the whole Grenada thing. I've been elbow deep in my brother's and sister's blood from these animals. Been there, done that, proud of it.

I serve only one master, God. I've seen the chaos, the death, the broken and battered children of this world and if you can say that we don't belong there, then I submit this to you:

Sadam's son cut a soccer players foot off because he missed a goal.
Women were taken from their homes and raped and then discarded like trash.
They took people out into the desert by the hundreds and executed them.
Men were forced to endure beatings and torture for looking at them wrong.

I say to those who do not belive we should be there, go there, see it with your own eyes and hear the stories and watch the women and children cry. You have no idea what is going on there because all you hear is the rhetoric from the media outlets bashing us.

You Mam should know first hand of the atrocities against mankind because your husband has his hands in the blood of those being persecuted. So tell again why we should not be there? Explain to me how you as a God fearing person can accept these crimes against innocent people. Answer this for me; Are we not the one Nation who fights for those who cannot defend themselves against tyrrany and the axis of evil?

We cannot let Republicans endanger our country any more. A vote for Republicans is a vote for terrorism. They were in office when the towers went down, and the leadership scoffed at reports portending 9/11 a month prior. Then, in a harried and disingenuous play to attack Iraq (a country that had ZERO to do with the attack on NYC), Republicans made political mincemeat out of anybody who disagreed with their "rationale" for war. Whether it was the outing of Plame, the disgracing of Cleeland, or the passive dismissal of Powell, those who didn't support Iraq were dealt with. Now, as we are mired in a war with no forseeable end (50, 60, 100 years? Or just 2013, Mr. McBu ..., er, McCain) that costs us $275 million/day and we are far too overextended to protect ourselves from the true enemies of the U.S. The Taliban is rebounding and Iran is practically flaunting its nuclear capabilities, yet we are hamstrung by the myopic Republican vision. Beware the military-industrial complex, says the last true conservative president. I like Ike. He'd hate the sorry excuse of a party the right has become. A joke. And one that is on the way out.

Do you think the Republicans will ever get over Clinton? The guy has been out of office for almost 8 years. Maybe if Georgie and his boys had listened to Richard Clarke about the possiblity of impending terrorists attacks instead of sitting around trying to figure out how to enrich their friends we could have avoided the 911 attack in the first place.

After the attack Bush told Clarke to find evidence that Saddam was linked to the terrorists. Clarke found no evidence of this and the FBI and CIA agreed with Clarke. The administration refused to accept this and told Clarke to update and resubmit his report.

Let's try again. Saddam was not linked to the terrorists. I agree, Congress and the media should have done a better job uncovering the truth before agreeing to the war but ultimately it is the President's responsibility to make sure he has all the facts before engaging in war. We attacked a country that did not attack us. It was wrong. In fact we made Iraq a recruiting tool for the terrorists. It was a BIG MISTAKE!

Those of us that knew folks lost in the Twin Towers grieve deeply at the fascist tactics of a few UN-American and UN-patriotic scumbags that seek to destroy the American way of life.

This particular scumbag might believe that only Republicans died on that horrific day; that only Republicans grieve; and that only Republicans are patriots. What he doesn't know - and what anyone that joins this SCUM in support of his fascist agenda doesn't know - is that America IS NOT a political party or an ideology. America is a set of ideals - sacred principles that Nazis like this DO NOT understand. America is written in our Constitution and Declaration of Independence and in the lives of every one of us - ALL OF US, not just the particular party, race, color or creed that this particular idiot happens to support.

The party of Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt is being destroyed by Neanderthals like this. Given such behavior, the GOP will soon be identified with fascists and bigots.

Just to set the facts straight here: Clinton did try to take out Bin Laden and fired crusie missles from the Persian Gulf. The Republicans cried foul, saying that Clinton was trying to distract the public from the Lewinski scandal. Not many citizens in this country even heard of Bin Laden until 9/11. There's no way the public would've supported Clinton if he was to carpet bomb Afganistan.

Republican or Democrat, both parties played a part in letting 9/11 happen.

If these two parties don't start to work with each other instead of bashing each other, there may not be a USA in the future.

Peace50:

Take off the partisan glasses and stop the childish name calling. First, a number of terrorist attacks happened on the Clinton watch and NOTHING was done to combat the problem. Had Clinton taken care of Bin Laden when he had the chance, we would not be at war today and would would still have the twin towers standing in NYC with over 3000 lives saved. Let's look at the facts. Gas prices have risen more since the Democrats took control of Congress in 2007 than they did in the 6 years of the Bush presidency before that. If it is fair to say Bush is responsible for gas in the first 6 years, then the Democratic Congress needs to take responsibility for the last 2 years where gas prices have risen more dramatically. Ultimately, it is the Democrats who are responsible for a lack of nuclear energy, a lack of domestic drilling and a lack of domestic refining capacity. Food prices are high because of 2 key factors. First, fuel prices. See previous note on how the Democrats have responsibility for this. Second, ETHANOL. Again, the Democrats, including Obama, have thrown massive financial resources behind domestic Ethanol production. Even though corn based ethanol is neither efficient or the solution to our energy problems, the massive support for corn based ethanol has driven up other food comodities that relate to corn or relate to fields being reassigned to corn production (wheat, beef, pork, etc). Admittedly, the world, generally, does not view our war in Iraq or Afghanistan very favorably. However, only the US was attacked on 9/11 and only the US has lost over 3000 innocent civilians at the hands of terrorists. Oh, by the way, the housing problems are largely tied to the extremely low interest rates that had to be implemented by the Fed following 9/11 and the struggling economy that was starting to show itself at the end of the Clinton term. These low interest rates, combined with too lenient of lending practices led to the housing issues. This is not the President or Congress' fault and the American tax payers should not be on the hook to bail out individuals who made housing purchases they could not afford.

Julezizcool... Well said. The problem with you liberals is you all feel you can say whatever you want but when a conservative speaks their opinion we are infringing on your rights. How can anyone honestly think that President Bush knew about and allowed 9/11 to happen. That is just sooo ignorant. I don't feel that Clinton knew either but he and his administration sure as hell dropped the ball on some seriously important info that could have stopped 9/11 from happening. The only ones responsible for 9/11 are the terrorists. We now as Americans have to protect our country. What would you rather have... the war over there or a war here on our soil. Everyone always blame the USA for everything but we are the first ones anyone calls for help. We need to ship out all the illegals and foreigners and bring home our soldiers and close our borders. We need to stand together conservative or liberal and protect our children, families and country.

jmdintpa:

The intelligence that took us to war in Iraq was not only supported by the Congress (including a number of Democrats), but it was also the same intelligence many other countries had gathered and agreed upon. If you are going to blame Bush, then you also have to blame every member of Congress who voted for it and every intelligence agency from other nations who had similar information. Afghanistan did not attack us. Radical Islamic Terrorists are not a nation and thus war is not simply battled against a single nation. We would be foolish to believe that the lone risk of terrorism is from people in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Never was the only threat and still is not. The war itself was over in weeks, bringing stability to the country has been the challenge and on-going battle, as both the Al-Qaida and Iran have no desire for Iraq to be stabilized. However, it is in our long-term interests to have a stable Iraq who can be an ally in our battle against these terrorists.

What I wonder is what God would think of what we are doing to the poor and needy of our society? Democratic policies on energy production and ethanol are driving up food prices, hurting the poorest people in our society. The democrats refusal to address fuel prices is contributing to business layoffs and bankruptcies, again, hurting our poor and middle class the most. Obama wants to raise taxes on the same people who own and operate businesses that employ 70% of all Americans. Those taxes, too, will ultimately hurt our poor and middle class citizens the most.

Why do Liberals/Socialist have such a hard time with putting OUR country and it's interest first?

The United States has and always will be a beacon of Democracy and Freedom, but the Liberals always seem to be offended by this. Why?

Why do Liberals always want to provide rights and liberties to those who are our enemies and non citizens, but strive to strip constitutional rights from true American citizens? Why?

Why are liberals so weak on defense? Why do they believe in taking away from my income to support someone else who has not worked for it?

Why do Liberals refuse to accept the fact that our nation's economy was built and is sustained by Oil. Liberals want me to go out on a paycheck to paycheck budget and spend mone
