Rays Reliever Won't Face Formal Charges

Published: July 16, 2008

TAMPA - Prosecutors have decided not to file formal charges against a Rays relief pitcher who was arrested outside the Hyde Park Cafe in April.

Al Reyes, who was celebrating his 38th birthday at the South Tampa bar, was arrested by Tampa police on a misdemeanor charge of affray.

"The facts of the case did not meet the definition of affray," Assistant State Attorney Pam Bondi said.

To charge someone with affray, prosecutors must prove he entered into a fight.

Reyes was leaving the Hyde Park Cafe about 2:30 a.m. April 11. Witnesses told police he collided with a ceramic pot, then exchanged words with another man, Eduardo Mora, apparently thinking Mora had pushed him.

Mora punched Reyes in the face, police said.

Witnesses told police Reyes was spitting blood and swinging his arms. An extra-duty officer, working security that night, warned Reyes to stop, but he did not, police said.

The officer used a police Taser on Reyes and he fell to the ground. When Reyes did not remain on the ground, as the officer instructed, the officer used the Taser a second time.

A-Rod's Wife Seeks Evidence Of Spying

MIAMI - The wife of Alex Rodriguez wants to know if the New York Yankees star hired private detectives or installed wiretaps to spy on her.

Cynthia Rodriguez's lawyers demanded evidence of any such surveillance as part of a routine request filed in Miami-Dade Circuit Court last week in their divorce case.

The document asks for any tape recordings, photographs, reports from investigators or results from possible wiretaps "or other electronic surveillance conducted by you or others on your behalf."

Cynthia Rodriguez filed for divorce last week after more than five years of marriage. She wants their $12 million waterfront mansion in Coral Gables, a luxury SUV, alimony and financial support for their two young daughters.

Alex Rodriguez has been linked in various tabloid reports to Madonna.

ANGELS: Former University of Tampa player Nolan Brannon signed a contract with Los Angeles, becoming the 16th Spartan over a three-year span to be drafted or signed by a major-league team. After signing with the Angels, the St. Petersburg native will report to Tempe of the Class A Arizona League.

YANKEES: Hideki Matsui's left knee swelled, increasing the possibility he will need season-ending surgery and perhaps giving the Yankees reason to contemplate signing Barry Bonds.

General Manager Brian Cashman wouldn't exclude adding Bonds, who has offered to play at the minimum salary.
