A man and his son escaped a structure fire in the Progress Village area of Tampa on Wednesday afternoon, but the house was destroyed.
Hillsborough County Fire Rescue responded to a 12:21 p.m. call of a fire at 7921 Endive Ave., Capt. Bruce Delk said. Units arrived to smoke and flames coming from a one-story home and had the fire extinguished in about 20 minutes, he said.
A man in his 20s and his 5-year-old son escaped the blaze with no injuries, Delk said. The child was playing with a lighter and started the fire in a hallway clothes hamper, which quickly got out of control, he said.
The home is "devastated," Delk said, and the Red Cross was called to assist the family. The child was referred to the county's Juvenile Firesetters program.
