MANATEE COUNTY - A woman accused of waiting more than hour to get her injured toddler to the hospital after a crash and police chase in Bradenton now faces charges of vehicular homicide.
Annjanette Jackson, 21, had been drinking with her friend, Jermaine McLean, who led police on a chase through Sarasota and Manatee counties, according to documents released Tuesday.
The chase started at 9 p.m. Sunday when Officers Erik Ball and Brent Wagner approached a Ford Crown Victoria that rolled through a stop sign. Jermaine McLean was at the wheel, and he accelerated at the officers to escape, reports show.
The car zoomed off, the officers followed, and, for about a minute, the Crown Victoria disappeared at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport. There, police say, McLean and Jackson switched seats.
Jackson then sped down U.S. 41, according to reports. She told detectives that McLean, 24, jerked the wheel and the car skidded out. McLean was thrown to the pavement. Deputies say he died Tuesday from his injuries. Jackson was charged with vehicular homicide today.
Authorities say Jackson waited more than an hour to get her injured toddler, Kemijiah Keno, to a hospital, hiding at a motel while her child was covered in blood and police investigated the crash on U.S. 41.
And, police say, Jackson did not buckle her young daughter in a car seat -- even though she had one in the trunk.
She hid near the motel pool and saw a friend who was staying there.
The friend, Rosa Welborn, took Kemijiah to her room and tried to clean off the blood.
"But she was hurt bad," Welborn said.
The child struggled to breathe, and Welborn urged Jackson to get Kemijiah to a hospital.
More than an hour later, members of Jackson's family drove to the motel and took the girl to Manatee Memorial.
The tot was in critical condition and moved to All Children's Hospital. She was in state custody as of Tuesday evening.
Sarasota police administrators continue to review the case to make sure the pursuit was justified. The inquiry could take several weeks.
