NEW PORT RICHEY -- A vehicle became submerged this morning at the New Port Richey boat launch ramp as the driver attempted to back a trailer holding his personal watercraft into the river.

Details remained sketchy as city police continue their investigation at the ramp along the Pithlachascotee River south of the Main Street bridge, directly behind the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce building.

A tow truck worker had to swim underwater to be able to hook a chain onto the vehicle. Only the tip of the camper top of the vehicle, which appeared to be some type of SUV, was visible above water.

The man police identified as the driver declined to talk to a reporter. "You got to be kidding me," the man said when the reporter was introduced. "I'm not interested" in commenting. The man was not injured in the accident.
