TAMPA - Torrential rain this afternoon has flooded a neighborhood in East Tampa and closed one lane of State Road 60 near U.S. 41.
Thunderstorms that hovered over central Hillsborough County for several hours dumped up to 4 inches of rain an hour over portions of the county, including near S.R. 60 and U.S. 41.
Rain has forced traffic on westbound S.R. 60 near U.S. 41 to one lane as water covers portions of the highways up to about a foot.
Water surrounds businesses in the area, including the parking lot of a UPS depot where workers may not be able to retrieve their cars.
In East Tampa, the rain produced street flooding and water has submerged parking lots and lawns.
Water is up to some houses and businesses around East Broadway Avenue, south of East Columbus Drive. Neighborhoods from North 60th Street to North 70th Street are affected by the standing water that is surrounding several homes and blocking some side streets.
The weather service warned of urban flooding about 3:15 p.m. after a series of thunderstorms that started near Gandy Boulevard marched northwest toward Brandon from about 2:30 p.m. until after 4 p.m.
Weather service radar estimated those storms were capable of producing more than 2 inches of rain an hour over parts of Tampa and Brandon.
