TAMPA- A woman was killed in the first of two accidents that occurred within 30 minutes of each other Thursday evening.
The first accident happened about 5:37 p.m. on U.S. 301 near Jefferson Street, the Hillsborough County Fire Rescue said.
A 2001 Lexus driven by Jonathan Carrillo, 16, of Tampa, was turning east on 301 and pulled into the path of a 1997 Ford driven by Randall Ray Dallman, 52, of Plant City, according to a Florida Highway Patrol release.
The front end of the Lexus hit the Ford, which then collided nearly head-on with a 2002 Kia driven by Tanya K. Swift, 44, of Thonotosassa, the report said.
A passenger in the Lexus, Sandra Lasala, 44, of Tampa, died at the scene, the patrol said.
Carrillo was in critical condition Thursday night at Tampa General Hospital, according to the report. No one else was injured.
The accident is still under investigation.
The second accident occurred at Dale Mabry Highway and Van Dyke Road at 6:02 p.m. and involved four vehicles, the fire department said.
A 1999 Mercury sport utility vehicle driven by Neal Anthony Kooistra, 27, of Odessa, was headed south on Dale Mabry when it hit the rear of a 2004 Mercedes Benz driven by Christopher P. Davidson, 55, of Lutz, according to a patrol release.
The Mercedes swerved across three lanes of traffic and into the median. The SUV continued on and hit the rear of a 2000 Nissan PK driven by Corey W. Westfall, 22, of Oldsmar. This forced the Nissan to hit the rear of a 2002 Lexus SUV driven by Joseph R. Sarruggia, 33, of Tampa. The Lexus hit a fifth vehicle, which fled the scene without exchanging information with the other drivers, according to the report.
Kooistra was reported in serious condition at St. Joseph's Hospital, the patrol said, and Davidson was in critical condition at Tampa General. Westfall received minor injuries.
Kooistra was charged with reckless driving.
