TAMPA - The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People -- and possibly the American Civil Liberties Union -- is expected to attend the next meeting of the commission designed to independently review Hillsborough County's jail system, according to the commission's chairman.
The commission was created in February after a surveillance video was released that shows inmate Brian Sterner being dumped from a wheelchair by a detention deputy who was trying to search him. Sterner, who is paralyzed from the chest down, had been arrested on a traffic-related charge.
The commission will release its final report Sept. 2.
Before then, commissioners will review random samples of internal affairs investigations, use-of-force investigations and inmate grievances, commission chairman Jim Sewell said.
The commission's next meeting is slated for 10 a.m. Aug. 1 on the 18th floor of the Fred B. Karl County Center, 601 E. Kennedy Blvd.
