Living In An Equestrian World
The people who make up the Bay area's thriving horse community don't drop their lifestyle at the stable door. Their love of all things equestrian tends to follow them through the house, from paintings in the living room to bucking toothbrush holders in the bathroom.
"Equestrian Style," by journalist Vicky Moon (Clarkson Potter, $65), explores equine home decor and design by taking readers inside a number of stunning homes, from the Campbell's Soup family's thoroughbred farm in Ocala to the racetracks of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Generous use of full-color photos throughout its 250 pages make for enjoyable voyeurism.
It's available at major booksellers.
Serve With Love
These days, buying a new home is a very big deal.
A housewarming gift that pays proper homage to such an auspicious occasion? Plates customized for the new abode.
Go completely custom with a picture of the new home, or its front door or a distinctive window, and the residents' name; or scale back on the cost and have one of four existing designs customized.
All of the art is created by artist Jessica Rust and can be small (as shown) or cover a whole dessert plate.
For small, custom images, you pay an art fee of $175. After that, plates are $55 each or four for $165; mugs are $45 each. There's no art fee to customize an existing design. Go to www.rustdesigns.com.
The Crowning Touch
Add a touch of royalty to the breakfast nook with these animated Lord and Lady mugs from www.jonathanadler.com. Those with loftier ambitions may opt for the King and Queen mugs (but - surprise! - they don't have quite as much personality). All four are new this summer in the Utopia pottery collection.
They're $24 each at the Web site, or call 1-800-963-0891.
Go Against The Grain
Remodeling the bathroom and looking for something no one else has? Check out Totally Bamboo's new bamboo vessel-style sink.
It's different, eco-friendly and, yes, pricey.
But it's also beautiful and durable, designed to last for decades, according to the press material. It comes in a variety of colors and sizes.
So how much is green individuality going for? The sinks retail for $499 at www.totallybamboo
.com.
