LARGO - A 21-year-old Clearwater man was killed early today when the 2007 Yamaha R6 sport motorcycle he was riding collided with a pickup at Ridge Road and Lakeside Drive, Largo police say.
A female passenger on the Yamaha was ejected and lost a leg, said Sgt. George Edmiston of the Largo Police Department.
The motorcyclist, John Prado, was riding south on Ridge Road at about 2 a.m. when the truck driver tried to cross the southbound lanes from the stop sign at Lakeside Drive, Edmiston said. Prado's passenger was Heather Lynn Cook, 20, of St. Petersburg; she underwent surgery later at Bayfront Medical Center.
The driver of the Chevrolet S-10 pickup was James Laier, 56, of Largo. Neither he nor a passenger in the truck, Frederick Belanger, 55, also of Largo, was seriously hurt, Edmiston said.
No charges have been filed. Investigators are trying to determine whether either driver was drinking and how fast each vehicle was going, Edmiston said.
