I came away from an election-poll-workers' training session the other day shaking my head in wonderment. Just as I felt that the registered voters of Hillsborough County, after a few elections, were becoming adjusted to using the touch-screen voting machines, we have taken a giant step backward for mankind by going to paper ballots.
Governor Crist and his political minions have "shot themselves in the foot" on this issue - there is no other way to put it.
As a polling precinct inspector, it was a joy to see the touch-screen machine come on line because of its simplicity - it did have an internal paper trail - and move the voters through the ballot process quickly. Now the time must be taken to fill in the ovals and the circles before you can cast your ballot in the optical scanner. Brings to mind a TV show, something about a fifth-grader?
Isn't it about time that the state of Florida stopped trying to "reinvent the wheel?"
