Plant High breezed through Thursday's pool-play portion of the inaugural Nike "7 On" Football Tournament in Beaverton, Ore., earning a No. 1 seed for today's double-elimination championship bracket play.
The Panthers finished the first day of the tournament 3-0, but an injury to junior WR Allen Sampson tempered their celebration. Plant's offense will be without one of its leading receivers after Sampson suffered a broken jaw in the second game against Illinois' East St. Louis High. Plant coach Robert Weiner said Sampson was leaping for a catch and his head collided with a defender's head. Weiner said he will be evaluated when he returns to Tampa this weekend.
The Panthers opened the tournament with a 27-7 victory over California's Long Beach Poly High. Plant then defeated East St. Louis 31-12 and concluded pool play with a 30-29 victory over Texas' Eisenhower High.
"They were tough games against very good teams and we really dominated those teams," Weiner said. "It was really a different guy in each game stepping up for us."
