TAMPA - University of Miami coach Randy Shannon has decided to go with a dual attack at the quarterback position, with former Plant star Robert Marve among those competing for playing time.
None of the quarterbacks on Miami's roster has taken a college snap. Marve is a redshirt freshman, Jacory Harris a true freshman and Cannon Smith is in his first season at Miami.
"We don't have a position where one sticks out, but we have depth because they are young," Shannon said Thursday at the Florida Sports Writers Association media days.
Shannon has not picked a starter, and he did not indicate who among the three is ahead in the competition for playing time. He decided that playing at least two quarterbacks is the best way to be prepared if something happens to the starter.
"We don't want to have to go to our No. 2 guy and start the season all over," Shannon said.
All three candidates, he said, had good offseason workouts.
"These guys are working hard, in the weight room, in the classroom, and on watching their own film. It's going to be competitive," Shannon said.
