CLEARWATER - The Clearwater Threshers minor-league baseball team will go to bat in pink jerseys Aug. 8 for the third annual "Pitch for Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Night" at Bright House Networks Field.
It's a fundraiser for breast cancer programs at Morton Plant Mease Health Care. Last year's "Pitch for Pink" raised $22,000.
Some 30 to 50 women who have been treated for breast cancer are expected to turn out for a pregame Breast Cancer Survivor's Walk around the stadium. They will be decked out in all things pink - hats, shirts, necklaces and pins - and carrying pink carnations.
"It is extremely moving to see these ladies," says Beth Hardy, a spokeswoman for Morton Plant. She has watched survivor walks at previous "Pitch for Pink" events. Some women were under treatment or going through chemotherapy, yet they were determined to complete the walk, she says.
"Pitch for Pink" will include a silent auction along the concourse. Bidders can compete for vacation getaways, team jerseys, restaurant gift certificates and merchandise donated by local stores.
The first 1,000 women who arrive at the stadium will receive free commemorative pink Threshers jerseys.
Bright House Networks Field is located at 601 Coachman Road, Clearwater. The Threshers will be taking on the Tampa Yankees. Stadium gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the first pitch will be thrown at approximately 7 p.m. Ticket prices are $4, $6 and $9. To purchase, call (727) 467-4457 or visit www.threshersbaseball.com.
