CLEARWATER - A man was arrested Sunday on charges he killed two kittens at his home.
James Patrick Gilley, 48, of 3081 Pine St., Clearwater, is charged with one count of animal cruelty.
Using his bare hands, he ripped one of the kittens in half, according to his arrest affidavit. The other kitten's jaw and mouth were smashed, the affidavit states. He was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol and has no mental health issues, the affidavit states.
About the same time he was accused of killing the kittens, he attacked his stepson, with whom he lives, records state. Authorities say he hit his stepson on the back of the head. He was charged with domestic battery.
Both incidents happened Saturday morning. Gilley initially was arrested on the domestic battery charge Saturday. Deputies were told Gilley had picked up a kitten and thrown it to the ground during a fight with his 21-year-old stepson, but no kitten could be found, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
Sunday, deputies were called to the Gilley residence again after two kittens were found dead near a storage shed. Gilley, who had posted bail on the domestic battery charge, was arrested again, the sheriff's office said.
