Regarding Michael Gerson's column "The Whale Oil Economy" (Other Views, July18):
Gerson's column makes the following statement: "But climate conditions for the last 10,000 years have been relatively stable."
In only the past millennium, we have had Northern Hemisphere conditions warm enough to support agriculture in Greenland and the Faroe and Shetland islands, while at different times we had London's Thames River freeze over sufficient for skating and winter fairs. This to Gerson is "relatively stable," yet he says what is happening now is sufficiently unusual to justify extraordinary economic costs and governmental regulations.
Yes, CO2 is high, but reputable scientists dispute its leading effects while current climate models fail to predict even current conditions, and there are other measurements that dispute warming. I believe man-made global warming is yet unproven and the suggested remedies too drastic for too little remedy.
