MADEIRA BEACH - City commissioners Tuesday night voted to make it unlawful to drink alcoholic beverages at or near pavilions at three city parks — Archibald Park, Kitty Stuart Park and the park at the western end of Johns Pass, the city clerk said today.
City Clerk Denise Schlegel said drinking is still allowed at the beach, as long as the alcoholic beverage is not being imbibed from a glass container. Alcohol is still prohibited in parking lots of commercial establishments, public parking lots and beach access easements, she said.
The new prohibition at the pavilions extends 20 feet in all directions from the pavilions shading groups of picnic tables, Schlegel said.
The alcohol ban was lifted in 2005, but the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, which has a contract with Madeira Beach for law enforcement services, wanted it reinstituted because too many people were drinking at or near the pavilions, which prevented families from using the facilities, Sgt. Jim Bordner said.
