TAMPA - A 56-year-old woman was taken to the hospital tonight after her vehicle struck a guardrail on the Courtney Campbell Causeway then plunged into the water, Clearwater police said.
Margaret DeMarco was traveling eastbound on the causeway about 6 p.m. when her car hit a small puddle of water and hydroplaned, witnesses told police. DeMarco lost control of her vehicle just before the small bridge on the causeway, hit a guard rail then continued into the water, witnesses said.
DeMarco was ejected from the vehicle. Other drivers who witnessed the crash pulled her from the water. DeMarco, whose condition was not immediately known, was taken to Tampa General Hospital.
No other injuries were reported in the single-vehicle crash, police said.
A tow truck and other emergency vehicles are expected to be on the causeway for another hour retrieving DeMarco's car out of the water.
