Bartow's city commission rejected a proposed contract with the Polk County Sheriff's Office and opted to keep its own police department, City Manager George Long said.
It was a 3-2 vote during the commission's Monday night meeting.
Long said a contract with the sheriff's office would have saved money and provided equal or better service.
He said local pride, the desire to maintain a distinct Bartow identity and a longstanding relationship with the people who would have been affected by the change likely helped shape the commission's decision.
