CLEARWTER - The woman who drowned Wednesday night in the Gulf of Mexico was a Norwegian tourist who was overtaken by a wave as her children watched from the beach, Clearwater police said.

The woman was identified this morning as Alicja I. Dyga, 51, said Clearwater public safety spokeswoman Elizabeth Daly-Watts.

Dyga was swimming just north of Pier 60 at about 9:30 p.m., when she disappeared in the water, Daly-Watts said. Her children, ages 8 and 16, ran to help her but couldn't find her, the spokeswoman said. Witnesses then called 911.

The 911 recording, released today by police, described how witnesses frantically scanned the water to catch sight of Dyga.

"There is a mother missing," the caller told dispatchers. "There's a mother missing in the water. Yes, they can't find her. OK, somebody actually saw her physically go in the water and not come out."

Dyga was discovered at 10:03 p.m., about a quarter-mile north of where she vanished, close to the shore, Daly-Watts said. Firefighters dragged her from the water and administered CPR, but it was too late. She was pronounced dead after being transported to Morton Plant Hospital.

Clearwater police have made arrangements for the children, and authorities contacted their father, who is in Norway, by telephone. The children will be flown back to their father, police said.

How heavy was this lady?? There usually aren't ANY waves on CLW beach, much less one capable of drowning someone. Something isn't right with this story.

This is a heart wrenching story. The poor woman came all the way from Norway so she and her kids could enjoy life at our sunny beach, only to meet her untimely death! My heart goes out to her kids who had to endure such a life-changing traumatic experience which will haunt them for the rest of their lives. And also to the loving family that had to bear this tragic news from afar. For anyone that has ever come close to drowning, like I did in that same area back in 1953, you can imagine the terror of that poor womans last moments! To the kids and family, may almighty God grant you peace of mind and heal your intense pain with time.

Such a tragedy. Such horror for the kids who are now alone until their father arrives from Norway. Sad.

Are there really "waves" strong enough at Clearwater beach to overcome someone?
I also think there is more to this story.

Poor kids had to see that and tried to help her. My son is going to be eight in one month and could not imaging him having to see that, let alone try and help me.
the waves are strong enough to over come a child and possibly a non swimmer. We were out there two weeks ago same area at 630 pm and I was holding both my boys hands b/c the waves were knocking them down and they are good swimmers.

TO:(tparich) It is apparent that the woman could't swim and she must have incurred the same situation I did in that area. She must have wandered out far enough for the wave to have caused her to lose her balance. Once this happened she couldn't regain her footing due to the undertow and the bottom droping out into deeper water. I can only suppose this is what happened due to my own experience but it's a shame that she didn't have a person to rescue her like I had. I owe my life to two kids that heard my screams from that pier and got the man that dived in to save me! Three unknown human beings that I never got to know, but still pray for!

Listen Glen, everyone feels sorry for the kids and we all wish that it didn't happen to the lady. Does that make you feel better? Good. Now, let's get back to the facts, put away the emotions for a minute and review my comment. Have you ever been to Clw beach during the summer? I would guess not so I'll go with that. The "waves" here couldn't knock a child off of their feet. They are almost non-existent most of the time; looks more like a lake. Are we to believe that a rogue wave of gargantuan proportions appeared out of no where and took her under? Not likely. I LIVE on Clw beach, didn't see it, didn't read about it in the news. Maybe the waves were higher than normal that night, I don't believe they were, but let's say they were. Did this woman feel the need to go swimming that much that she put her best judgement and her children in a secondary position to her own need to take a dip? You have to go pretty far out in the gulf to get into deeper water. Why not stay close to shore if the waves are that bad? Something is amiss with story Glen. Unless you can put together an intelligent and worthwhile response, then I would suggest that you show reserve before calling out my name.

Glen, just the response I thought I'd get back from you. Nothing intelligent, just your take on what I should say/feel. Sorry peck her head, but compassion isn't in order for stupid people. Accidents happen, so do tragedies, I understand that, but putting your life at risk is a dumb decision, regardless of whether the kids are watching or not. If you're not intellectual enough to READ, DECIPHER, and PROCESS A LOGICAL UNBIASED THOUGHT about what you see in the media, then that's your deficiency. People in the back of the short bus don't get the luxury of telling the driver where to turn.

I feel really bad for her children to have had experienced this tragedy close up. I also almost drowned years ago in Acapulco because a wave came out of nowhere and just swept me under and my son was on the beach watching. Three local mexicans immediately jumped in and swam out to save me and for that I will be forever greatful to God for sending help that day. I have never seen these people again but I still think about it every once in a while especially when I read a story like this tragedy. May God bless the children and the husband of this woman.

I told a friend yesterday that the waves were stronger than I had ever seen at Clearwater Beach and I've lived here for 8 years.
A wave knocked me over yesterday and pulled me out away from the beach, but I just let it take me out and used the next round of waves to help me get back to shore.
It was dangerous yesterday for anyone who isn't used to it.

The lady suffered horribly and didn't deserve 5 seconds of the pain she endured. Being younger or older or at a different stage in life really has nothing to do with our comments at all, but rather the forum that we use. We take almost nothing at face value because that's our right to criticize, critique, and question the circumstances surrounding every story on this site. Two women in two days is intollerable! The last time I was at Clearwater beach was about 40 years ago. Since you are familiar with that area, do they have any rip current warning signs posted, like some other Florida beaches have? This is a must especially when there's a fool hurricane in the gulf! What's so sad is that allot of folks come to our beaches that never swam in the ocean or gulf before, lakes & rivers being what they are used to. They see all the promo ads that our chambers of commerse place on their TV's of people frolicking in the waves but they have absolutely no knowledge of rip currents and end up perishing in them! These stories have bothered me all day since I first read them. Goes to show you how fragile your life is, one minute having fun and the next dying a terrible death. Hope I can sleep tonight.

If you want to post a comment (theres that phrase again) about the tide or the impact of hurricane Dolly that is ok too. Those of you that think you are the morality police- go shove it up your ssa. (DarthRandall) Just for you: Using that poor dead womans name in your "joke" does not say much for you as a person! Maybe you could'nt care less, but I think I write for many that think this should be brought to your attention. You're not doing yourself any favors by acting like a heartless child!

marice - You can't say anything (original) better. You're like a bad parakeet. I keep waiting for your posts to start with , "AWWWWWK! What you said, ______! AWWWWWWWWK!".........
And, as for you, ANTICHOKE - I think I speak for everyone here (except for your beloved bird, marice) when I say I really don't give a [word omitted] what you think about my posts, now or ever. This was a personal joke between myself and my dear, dear friend marice. I could care less, but I don't really see how. Let me give it a try..... Oh, wait! I could! I have actually found a way to care less! Thanks for the inspiration!!!!
Now, if you don't mind - I'm sure there's a story about someone on fire or dead babies I need to mock.

(DarthRandall) Don't be so nieve, you don't place PERSONAL "jokes" on a PUBLIC site and expect only one person to view it. As for your attack on me and Marice being the "ONLY" two people on this site finding your dribble disgustingly vacant of intelligent content or forethought, you can blame ilk like yourself for running sensible people off this page. You might think that you upset me, but you haven't, as I learned self control years ago - something you also need to progress in. GROW UP!

ANTI - If I can run you and marice off I'll die happy.......
I've learned "self control", but this place, being a comment section of an on-line section of a local newspaper, affords me the luxury of opening up and not being a stuffy, tight-ssaed know-it-all. You know, like yourself. Lighten up a LITTLE, the world already reads depressing, sad stories - it doesn't need to read sad, boring, depressing comments about said story.
As far as my comment about a "personal joke" - you really don't get sarcasm, do you?

(DarthRandall) My cyber-space friend, and I hope we're still friends, there's a time to be funny and a time to be serious. I'm not trying to be a stuffed shirt know-it-all but I'm trying to bring to your attention that there are allot of folks that have been very emotionaly moved by this womans tragic demise and that you are not presenting a good image of yourself. I'm trying to help you, not critisize you, so why don't you understand that?

ANTI - I will give you credit, you do come on here and post comments, good bad or indifferent, that's all that matters. It's a comment section, that's all this is. Some of us make funny comments, some make serious comments, some boring or stupid comments. No matter what comment you post, it's better than the marice's of the world who sit by their computer waiting for someone to post something she doesn't agree with so she can swoop down and call them names, and tell TBO when it's time to close down a comment section because she doesn't like what's written. She adds no actual value because she doesn't actually comment on the story, just comments on others who have taken their time to actually post something.

Darth, as usual your facts are wrong. I have made many posts on all kinds of threads that are commentaries on the story, and that don't criticize other forum members. The only time I criticize you is when you make sophomoric attempts at humor that are at the expense of those that cannot defend themselves. I am not the only one that has called you on the carpet for that.

What fact backs up the idea that this woman was fat? What fact backs up the statement that she didn't care about her children. Get a grip people, you disgust me.
You seem to critisize A LOT Of people on here. That's just from this post, last night. That's not even including the shots at myself, the rev, LTR and Quagmire. There was more, much more. And there always has been. You seem to think you are the "moral right" on here, but you're just a sad, miserable woman who wanted to be liked and when you weren't you turned sad, miserable, AND bitter towards who who wouldn't let you play in their reindeer games.... Good day to you, sour madam.

Pretty simple explaination. I grew up in Tampa and my FAV beach is the State Park in Dunedin. Priceless place to go!

Anyway, I cannot tell you after going there about 20 years how many tourist ((there was no doubt they were) either were already sunburned to a crisp and still laying out...sitting on the beach with a stingray wound, going out to the point when tide was coming in...DANGEROUS...even watched one couple nearly swept away that did manage to swim to the backside of the "point" and then had to walk back through the tall grass (and sandspurs) to get to safety. They take for granted the ocean is a big pool. It's not. She probably was laying/floating and a small wave got her taking her breath away so to speak...and she was most likely in water over her head.

Ok, to Frankie and whomever else thinks they know what happened or what didn't happen...unless your a darn FBI Agent or Cop or Oceanographer an you know exactly how and why this women died, you should keep your mouth shut! Freak accidents happen, who cares if the waves are usually calm as a lake, you cannot predict Mother Nature and you cannot predict what will happen and when. The bottom line is that a women died, 2 innocent children are without their Mother and smart a** remarks or opinions should be kept to yourself!
