Regarding "55: Don't Count On It" (front page, July 17):
Reducing the speed limit would slow commerce as truck drivers' time on the highway is limited by the DOT to 10 hours of driving on the highway. They are then required to take a 12-hour break. The 55-mph speed limit will deny truckers a reasonable amount of time to deliver their product, and shortages will cause price increases.
With the increased fuel cost and slowing the truckers down, it will make it impossible for the trucker to make a living, creating more problems than the lower speed limit would solve.
The 55-mph speed limit would hurt delivery men, taxi drivers, salesmen and slow the trucks that deliver the fuel, ironically causing more fuel shortages and more fuel price increases.
