St. Petersburg super middleweight Jeff Lacy survived a near knockdown in the second, as well as several other precarious moments to collect a 95-95, 96-94, 97-93 majority decision against Columbian Epifanio Mendoza on ESPN2's "Wednesday Night Fights" in Cabazon, Calif.
Both fighters delivered severe blows, Mendoza with his hard-jarring uppercuts and Lacy with his collection of left and right hooks.
Lacy (24-1, 17 KOs) nearly went down in the second round after taking a big right. He lasted the round, but that wasn't the last of his issues. He was also hurt in the sixth and eighth rounds.
The performance against Mendoza (28-6-1, 24 KOs) may have affected the potential for a November showdown with Lacy's former Olympic teammate, Jermain Taylor (27-2-1, 17 KOs). The two were on the 2000 team that competed in Sydney, Australia.
PAVLIK-HOPKINS: Unbeaten middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik has finalized a deal to fight longtime titlist Bernard Hopkins on Oct. 18 in Atlantic City, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said Wednesday.
