Pinellas Park police have filed an attempted second-degree murder charge against a man they say shot another man today.
The shooting happened at about 1 a.m. today at 7321 Cedar Court N. Officers arrived and found 21-year-old Jose Luiz Hernandez-Monsqueda of Pinellas Park in the parking lot with a gunshot wound. He was taken to Bayfront Medical Center with what paramedics first thought was a life-threatening injury.
Hernandez-Monsqueda has since undergone surgery and his condition has improved, said Capt. Sanfield Forseth of the Pinellas Park police department.
Based on witness descriptions, investigators were able to track down a car that had been seen near the crime scene, according to the Pinellas Park Police Department.
The car led officers from Pinellas Park and the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office on a brief high-speed chase that ended when the car crashed through a chain-link fence and into a 4-foot-tall dirt barrier. The driver got out and ran into some brush, hiding in a retention pond.
Ricky T. Roberts, 23, of 3376 Cedar Court, Pinellas Park, was in chest-deep water when officers caught up to him and arrested him.
Roberts has been charged with attempted second-degree murder, possession of a short-barreled shotgun, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and fleeing and eluding, according to records at the Pinellas County Jail.
