NEW PORT RICHEY - An afternoon house fire left a New Port Richey family homeless Friday and killed their pets, Pasco Fire Rescue officials said.
The fire happened at about 3 p.m. today at 7251 Box Elder Drive in the Orchid Lake Village subdivision. The house is owned by David Jay, 63, who lived there with his daughter, Kara Sediack, 32, and her son and daughter.
The family members were unharmed, but the fire killed their two Dachshunds along with two ferrets and two hamsters they kept as pets, said Pasco Fire Rescue Batallion Chief Albert Dennison.
The dogs were buried on the property; Pasco Animal Services disposed of the other pets, Dennison said.
The fire remained under investigation Friday evening, but it appeared to have been accidental and may have involved a lamp, Dennison said.
The fire severely damaged the living areas of the house and claimed most of the family's possessions,he said.
The America Red Cross was contacted to help the family find temporary housing and other accommodations, Dennison said.
