CRYSTAL RIVER - Kayakers and boaters are planning a "sit-in" in Crystal River to remind boaters of the presence of manatees in Kings Bay over the summer.
Kings Bay is a well-known gathering spot for manatees in the winter, but not a lot of people know the large, slow-moving animals are still around in the summer. Unaware boaters and jet skiers often run over them.
Manatee advocate Tracy Colson says kayakers and boaters will stop in the bay for a sit-in from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday to raise awareness. The Save the Manatee Club is providing banners that say, "Please Slow, Manatees Below."
State wildlife officials report that 15 manatees have already died in Citrus County waters so far this year, compared with 12 in all of 2007.
