CLEARWATER - A Clearwater police officer received an employee notice after her gun discharged in April as she was entering a hotel room where authorities believed a woman might be in distress, according to Clearwater police.
The officer, Keisha Bradley, 35, was also ordered to undergo remedial training, said Elizabeth Daly-Watts, Clearwater's public safety spokeswoman.
On April 19, 2008, an officer reported to a supervisor the circumstances surrounding the discharge of the 10-year veteran's department-issue firearm.
This is what happened, authorities say:
Bradley and some colleagues attempted to make contact with the occupants of a motel room to investigate an anonymous complaint of glass breaking and a male and female arguing, internal affairs records say.
While they were trying to contact the occupants, officers saw someone looking out the window, but that person refused to open the door. Concerned about a woman inside who had reportedly been screaming, a maintenance worker was asked to open the door, internal affairs records say.
Bradley had her gun unholstered and in the so-called "low-ready" position, about waist level, and pointed forward at a downward angle, internal affairs records say. As she walked into the motel room, the gun discharged. No one was hurt.
Bradley was found to have violated policies governing the careful use of weapons.
