Shortly after 10:30 p.m. Thursday, Jose Pizano slammed his 1985 white Buick into a TECO pole near Gibsonton and Alavista drives in Gibsonton, deputies say. But before they arrived, deputies say Pizano tried to climb out of the wrecked car — leaving behind his two children, ages 7 and 11.
The 7-year-old was taken to Tampa General Hospital as a precaution, deputies say.
When deputies reached the accident scene, Pizano smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot, watery eyes, according to an affidavit that describes what happened.
Pizano, of Gibsonton, agreed to take a field sobriety test and performed badly, officials said. A breath test showed that he had a 0.172 and 0.175 blood-alcohol level. In Florida, drivers are considered impaired with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 or higher.
A computer check showed that in March, Pizano's license had been revoked for five years for being a habitual traffic offender.
Pizano was charged with driving with a suspended or revoked license and child neglect, both felonies, and driving under the influence with persons under 18 and driving under the influence with property damage, both misdemeanors.
He is being held at the Orient Road Jail with no bail set, according to jail records.
