A flyover lane opened Thursday morning in New Tampa, connecting southbound Bruce B. Downs Boulevard to southbound Interstate 75.
The lane is expected to make commuting easier because drivers headed toward downtown will no longer have to wait for a light to change to merge onto the interstate.
The drive may get even faster before too much longer. The Florida Department of Transportation says a second flyover lane will open in the next few months.
Meanwhile, DOT urged drivers on Bruce B. Downs to be cautious as motorists get accustomed to the new traffic pattern, which includes the closing of double left turn lanes at the interchange.
Rain delayed the opening but the overall project, however, is months ahead of schedule.
