Labels, they often don't work. In Todd Pressman's July 23 guest column, "Liberals Push County Mayor Effort," he stated that the county mayor effort was "born and nurtured as a liberal-led referendum."
Imagine my shock to learn that I am now a liberal. I have been identified as an extra-chromosome conservative before but never a liberal. I guess Mr. Pressman has not looked at the list of members of the executive and steering committees published in the local newspapers. There are members of both parties and people who may legitimately be identified as either liberal or conservative (not the same person.)
Last Friday I participated in a county mayor discussion at the SouthShore Roundtable in Sun City Center. I presented the "pro" perspective and former Commissioner Jan Platt presented the "con" perspective. I am certain Mrs. Platt will be surprised to discover that she has turned into a rock-ribbed conservative.
Mr. Pressman goes on to spread misinformation regarding the cost and the purpose. Perhaps he would like to dispense with the election of a governor and have the Legislature hire someone to manage the state.
This does not add another layer of government. It does add checks and balances. It also adds accountability. As the county is now structured, no one can claim to be speaking with the vision of the electorate.
Pat Bean is doing an admirable job. This referendum is not about Bean or any commissioner. This is about the structure of government and the future of Hillsborough County.
