CELEBRATION - Say, what were all those Bucs doing at the opening of Brett Favre Training Camp on Friday?
One by one, non-stories, including more than 70 quarterbacks, rode in golf carts from the parking lot to the team hotel.
Chris Simms is here.
Brett Favre isn't.
What's up with that?
On reporting day, there were no Favre sightings, only more rumors.
Meanwhile, deep in space, Jon Gruden says he hasn't heard much about any of this, as he has been on a family vacation, where the stops included Mount Rushmore.
"Saw Crazy Horse, too," Gruden said.
From Crazy Horse to Crazy Coach.
Or not so crazy.
It's Brett Favre.
Can You Have Too Many QBs?
Still, Jonny G must be mad if he thinks we believe he's that far out of the loop on Favre.
He's all over this.
Gruden was given every chance to shoot down Favre rumors Friday, but tap danced, just in case it all comes crashing down.
"I love Jeff Garcia," Gruden said.
Ever heard that one before?
This can happen because the Packers, incredibly, don't want Favre, because Garcia is so very happy about his Bucs contract that he's missing the first two days of practice to attend the 35th anniversary of his father's junior college football championship team.
Huh?
This can happen because the Super Bowl is a home game for the Glazers this year, and when it comes to Super Bowls, Brett Favre has been there, won that.
This can happen because you can never have too many quarterbacks, even when you have five under contract.
Josh Johnson has come to terms.
Brett Favre hasn't.
What's up with that?
It's Brett Favre.
This can happen because, as Garcia now knows, it doesn't take long to go from the heart of Gruden's heart to the dark side of the moon if there's a juicier rack of ribs out there. When it comes to quarterbacks, Gruden is the ultimate eating machine.
This can happen because years ago, when a young Favre was traded from the Falcons to Packers, the starry-eyed Packers assistant who picked him up at the airport was ... Jon Gruden.
This can happen because nothing is crazy.
This can happen because it's Brett Favre.
Garcia Is His QB ... For Now
"I don't think it's a distraction at all," Bucs defensive lineman Kevin Carter said. "I think it's just entertainment."
Carter on Garcia:
"He's one of my favorite people. He's one of my favorite Bucs. ... His performance? It was inspirational."
Gruden said he last talked to Brett Favre six years ago, and that he has no idea what is going on with Green Bay or Favre, and then he dished out some classic non-denial denials.
Like this:
"Every quarterback that's available has been linked to me at some time or another."
And this:
"As I sit here today, Jeff Garcia is our quarterback and I'm very excited about that."
Now that's entertainment.
You get the feeling that behind the Bucs hotel there's an airport courtesy car with Gruden's name on it - and the motor is running?
It's Brett Favre.
