BOSTON - The New York Yankees acquired outfielder Xavier Nady and left-hander Damaso Marte from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night, bolstering their bullpen and offense ahead of next week's trade deadline.
Nady and Marte were coveted by several teams, and New York parted with top outfield prospect Jose Tabata and three other minor-leaguers to complete the deal one day after team executives met in Tampa.
Two people familiar with the deal confirmed the trade on condition of anonymity, because physicals were still pending.
Nady is batting .330 with 13 home runs and 57 RBIs in 88 games. Marte is 4-0 with a 3.47 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 462/3 innings.
BRAVES: Atlanta pitcher Mike Hampton is scheduled to take the mound against the Phillies today for his first start in almost three years.
Hampton hasn't pitched in the major leagues since Aug. 19, 2005. He has had two major surgeries on his left elbow in the last three years and a long line of injuries while trying to work his way back.
PIRATES: Pittsburgh lost four minor-league players on Friday, two because of positive tests for performance-enhancing drugs and two because of a revised military policy.
MLB announced 50-game suspensions for right-handed pitchers Roman Carrasco and Luis Figuera, who tested positive for anabolic steroids.
Outfielder Cole White and catcher Chris Simmons both will be forced to leave the Pirates' short-season Single-A affiliate in State College, Pa., after the U.S. Army revised its interpretation of the U.S. Department of Defense's policy on allowing cadets to pursue professional sports careers.
