Versatile Blake Sent To Dodgers

CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Indians traded versatile third baseman Casey Blake and cash to the Los Angeles Dodgers for two minor-leaguers on Saturday.

Blake is joining the Dodgers for the playoff push. They entered Saturday one game behind the first-place Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL West. Blake, who has also played right and left field, is expected to play third for the Dodgers, who haven't gotten what they needed at the position from rookies Andy LaRoche and Blake DeWitt.

In exchange for Blake, the Indians got catcher Carlos Santana and right-hander Jonathan Meloan.

The Dodgers (50-52) have been looking for a dependable bat for weeks, and Blake's name first came up when the Dodgers were in trade talks with the Indians for ace CC Sabathia, who was dealt to the Milwaukee Brewers.

Blake is batting .289 with 11 homers and 58 RBIs, and he is hitting .398 with runners in scoring position.

"Casey Blake is a gamer," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said. "His experience and character will be a plus as we head down the stretch in the final two months of the regular season."

ATHLETICS: Third baseman Eric Chavez has started a throwing program that should determine whether the six-time Gold Glove winner can play again this season.

The 30-year-old Chavez is on the disabled list for the second time this year because of his troublesome right shoulder. He had surgeries on each shoulder and his back last year and is still feeling the effects.

WHITE SOX: Chicago placed pitcher Scott Linebrink on the 15-day disabled list because of inflammation in his right shoulder.

The move was retroactive to July 23. The team recalled right-handed pitcher Ehren Wassermann from Triple-A Charlotte.

The right-handed Linebrink was 2-2 with a 2.31 ERA in 42 games this season. Wassermann was 1-0 with a 1.67 ERA in 24 games with Charlotte.
