TAMPA - Police arrested a man today they have been looking for since Saturday night, when he eluded an officer that was stabbed from behind in the neck.
Mario Williams, 25, of 2317 W. St. Conrad St., was arrested on charges of escape from law-enforcement custody and obstructing or opposing an officer, Tampa police spokeswoman Andrea Davis said.
According to Davis:
Officer Ryan Culbertson was responding to a disturbance call in the North Boulevard Homes housing complex on Saturday night. After he left the call, he saw a large group of people at the intersection of Oregon Avenue and Chestnut Street. After calling for backup, the officer tried to arrest Williams. Culbertson got one handcuff on the suspect before someone attacked the officer from behind.
Williams and the person who stabbed the officer fled the scene, Davis said.
Police are still trying to find the other suspect.
When other officers arrived on scene, they found Culbertson bleeding from the neck. He was dazed and had trouble recalling the incident, Davis said. He was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he had 10 stitches put in his neck and was treated for a broken jaw.
Culbertson has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home.
