ST. PETERSBURG - More than 150 guests were evacuated from a St. Petersburg hotel this morning because of smoke from an overheating air-conditioning unit, according to fire rescue officials.
A fire was reported at the Hilton St. Petersburg Carillion Park, 950 Lake Carillon Drive, about 5:20 a.m. Investigators found that the motor of a air-conditioner unit on the roof broke and pumped smoke into the building, said St. Petersburg Fire Rescue Assistant Chief James Wimberly.
Firefighter initially called a three-alarm response, which is standard procedure for such as large building such as the 11-story Hilton.
No one was injured, but 170 guests were evacuated, Wimberly said.
