ST. PETERSBURG - A 48-year-old man was shot Tuesday night by the driver of a car he had told to slow down, St. Petersburg police say.
The man was shot once in the upper body outside his house in the 2200 block of East Harbor Drive South about 6:15 p.m., St. Petersburg police spokesman George Kajtsa said. The Tampa Tribune is not printing his name or address because the shooter has not been arrested.
The victim yelled at the driver of a silver four-door car to slow down after he saw the car chasing a scooter down the road, Kajtsa said. The victim yelled to the driver that there were children in the neighborhood, Kajtsa said.
The driver of the car stopped, backed up and fired one round out a rear passenger-side window, Kajtsa said. The bullet did not strike anything or anyone.
As the car began to pull away, the resident who had yelled retrieved a weight plate and was going to throw it at the car when the driver fired again, this time twice, Kajtsa said. This time the resident was hit and was later taken to Bayfront Medical Center.
His condition was unknown. A hospital spokeswoman said this afternoon that no one with the shooting victim's name is listed as a patient at the hospital.
