"You Won't Believe It's Vegan!" by Lacey Sher and Gail Doherty (Da Capo Press/Lifelong Books, $17.95)
My first thought after seeing this title: Make a bet? I know my vegan from my omnivore menu. Still, the book does try to make the vegan way of eating appear more mainstream and delicious. (Potato Skins and Peanut Butter and Jam Cookies, anyone? Maybe you would prefer Blueberry Sour Cream Coffee Cake) Still, there are lots of reminders that this is a more restricted diet. We dare you to serve Tofu Hot Wings on Super Bowl Sunday to a table of Buffalo wing aficionados.
"Goat Cheese," by Maggie Foard (Gibbs Smith, $24.99)
A co-worker walking past my desk saw this book and said, "Goat cheese. A whole book. Really." Yes, really. Goat cheese consumption is skyrocketing in the United States. (OK, so it started pretty low.) Still, dairy farmers are producing some fine goat cheese these days. Maggie Foard, who has her own goats, has written a charming cookbook full of delicious-looking recipes that include goat cheese. The Caprese Salad With Goat Mozzarella looks tempting enough to make Mario Batali cry tears of joy.
"New South Grilling," by Robert St. John (Hyperion, $29.95)
Subtitled "Fresh and Exciting Recipes From the Third Coast," this Mississippi-based chef elevates the standard grilling fare with fun flavor experimentation and a little bit of Southern sass. (Beer can chicken gets a makeover as a "Yardbird With Barley and Hops Enema." We'll let that settle for a moment. OK, all better.) More than protein gets a workout here. The Grilled Peach Shortcake had us drooling.
"Fiber Up Slim Down Cookbook," by the authors of Prevention magazine (Rodale, $19.95)
We've all done the eat-less-exercise-more-lose-weight thing. Most times it works. Sometimes it doesn't, mostly because the foods we eat are less satisfying. Prevention editors have devised a plan of eating more fiber, thereby giving your body foods that are more healthful and filling. The book goes into great detail about the fundamentals for the plan, then offers lots of great recipes and menus. By the end, your colon will be the strongest muscle in your body.
