BROOKSVILLE - A suspected shoplifter enlisted the help of her 17-year-old son to steal a pair of sneakers from a Bealls Outlet store on Tuesday.
Loss-prevention staff at the store on Cortez Boulevard told a deputy that Wendy Macchio removed the shoes from a box, put them on and handed her old sneakers to her son. Her son put the old shoes back into the box and on the shelf, deputies say.
Macchio also tried to steal two pairs of white jean shorts, but she was stopped at the door with the pilfered merchandise, a report shows. When questioned by a deputy, Macchio said it was a "big mistake" to bring her son along and that he only helped her because she told him to, a report states.
Macchio, 36, of 13128 Bamboo St., was charged with retail theft and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Her son was temporarily placed with the Department of Children and Families because there was no other guardian or parent to pick him up.

SPRING HILL A mail carrier came to the rescue of a woman who was attacked by her roommate on Tuesday.
The victim was at her boyfriend's house when the suspect, Joshua Arthur, called and asked for his money. When she promised to pay him in a few days, Arthur hung up then called back 40 minutes later to tell her to pick up her belongings from the front yard.
When the victim returned home and began putting her stuff back in the house, Arthur reportedly hit her in the face several times and choked her.
A mail carrier in the area heard her screams and sheltered her in his truck while he called 911. Arriving deputies reported that the victim had a bruised cheek, bloody mouth and several scratches on her neck, but the victim refused medical treatment.
Arthur, 24, of 7489 Canterbury St., was charged with felony battery.
