Some people in Sarasota are upset that the state Legislature changed the name of a John Ringling Causeway bridge.
High school student Alex Yoder is circulating a petition to change the name back to Ringling. Government officials are getting angry e-mails asking why there was little public notice.
Lawmakers in May voted to change the name to honor 81-year-old Gilbert Waters, who led a grassroots effort to create the bridge and landscape adjacent parks. The bridge had been named for the Ringling Brothers circus magnate who made Sarasota its winter headquarters and had an opulent mansion there.
Legislators say nothing can be done until the 2009 session. But they say they hope to find a solution to honor both men.
