CLEARWATER BEACH - Thunderstorms that have been rumbling over the beach this afternoon could cause problems for Criss Angel's escape attempt from a beach motel scheduled for demolition just before 11 p.m.
Production officials from the A&E series "Criss Angel: Mindfreak" are keeping a close watch on the weather because lightning and wind could hamper Angel's exit via helicopter from the roof of the Spyglass Resort.
Rain would not be as much trouble as wind and lightning, says Lisa A. Kelly, an explosives expert and president of Advanced Explosives Demolitions Inc., or AED, the company that plans to implode the nine-story Spyglass during a live telecast beginning at 10 tonight.
Mark Wilburn, a spokesman for AED, said that according to the National Weather Service the storms are expected to break after 6 p.m.
In an interview Tuesday, Angel said that he has been amazed at how quickly the Florida weather changes. Thousands are expected to crowd onto the beach near the hotel to watch his escape.
