DUNEDIN - A 27-year-old man drowned this afternoon at Honeymoon Island State Park, according to state officials.
Department of Environmental Protection officials identified the man tonight as Jorge Palma of Clearwater. The agency oversees state parks.
At about 1:30 p.m., a lifeguard was notified of a man in the water in the Gulf of Mexico and the lifeguard tried a rescue, said Amy Graham, public information officer for the DEP. One of Palma's four children approached a woman on the beach and told her that her father had been swimming in waist-deep water, Graham said.
It appears that a current took Palm farther out into the gulf, officials said.
Palma was unconscious when lifeguards found him. He was taken to Mease Dunedin Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
