St. Petersburg police say they have arrested a 15-year-old in a shooting that resulted from a dispute over a car speeding in a residential area.
On Tuesday, 46-year-old Ernest Wooten was standing near his home in the 2200 block of East Harbor Drive South when he yelled at a silver Toyota speeding by, said St. Petersburg Police Department spokesman Bill Proffitt.
Wooten told the driver to slow down because children were playing in the area.
Witnesses told police the driver stopped, backed up and shot at Wooten but missed. As the car pulled away, Wooten picked up a weight plate to throw, and the driver fired again, hitting Wooten in the chest, Proffitt said.
The driver, Darris L. Brown, sped away, Proffitt said.
Wooten, in critical condition, was taken to Bayfront Medical Center. He is expected to survive, Proffitt said.
Police found Brown at Emerald Bay apartments, 3909 38th Ave. S., early this morning after spotting the car. They say the Toyota was reported stolen July 16 and that Brown had a .32-caliber semiautomatic handgun.
Brown was taken to a juvenile assessment center and faces charges of attempted murder, carrying a concealed firearm, being a delinquent in possession of a firearm, auto theft, not having a valid driver's license and violation of probation.
