DADE CITY - With ideas about making Pasco's girls soccer team as successful as the boys, the Pirates tabbed longtime boys assistant Warren Lowery to lead the girls team. He replaces Wardell Powell, who resigned in January.
Lowery, who assisted boys coach Barry Grayling for five years, wants to use some of the same coaching philosophies from the team he helped to eight state playoff wins and a .645 winning percentage.
"There's a lot of talent here on the girls' side," Lowery said. "It's certainly going to be a big change from the boys game, but I plan to bring some stuff we've done with the boys and integrate it into their game."
Lowery has been a head coach in East Pasco club soccer for 19 years. But when his youngest son, Tampa Tribune first-team All-Pasco County defender Ryan Lowery, graduated this year, Warren Lowery wanted a head coaching job at the high-school level. His hiring was delayed because of Pasco's uncertain budget.
The hiring also leaves a vacancy on the boys coaching staff, which isn't expected to be filled for at least two weeks.
The Pasco girls team was 11-10-1 in Powell's final season, including an opening-round loss to Zephyrhills in the Class 4A, District 8 tournament. Powell was 61-45-8 overall in five years.
ZEPHYRHILLS PARENTS MEETING: The parent meeting for all JV and varsity football players is Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Zephyrhills gymnasium. Coach Tom Fisher will be able to answer questions. All forms and fees will be collected at this time, and other important information will be discussed.
