TAMPA - A motorcyclist was seriously injured this morning after leading a Florida Highway Patrol officer on a high-speed chase on Interstate 4, the highway patrol said in a news release.

Alana L. Powers, 20, was taken to Tampa General Hospital just before 10 a.m. today after the Honda motorcycle she was riding hit another vehicle.

According to the news release, highway patrol Sgt. Steve Gaskins started pursuing Powers when he saw her motorcycle traveling more than 90 mph and weaving between other vehicles on the interstate.

When Gaskins turned on his emergency lights, the motorcycle sped up, surpassing 100 mph, according to the news release.

The chase ended in a crash when the motorcycle went onto the inside shoulder of the interstate near County Road 579. The motorcycle hit a minivan and flipped onto the median.

The driver of the minivan, who was not injured, stopped to help Powers, along with several other witnesses.

No charges have been filed.
